Hayley and I would like to take the time to talk about the Antibiotic Stewardship Initiative.  Antibiotic Stewardship refers to a set of commitments and actions designed to optimize the treatment of infections while reducing the adverse events associated with antibiotic use.  The Centers for Disease Control reccomends that all nursing homes take steps to improve antibiotic prescribing practices and reduce the instance of inappropriate usage.  Inappropriate usage and overuse can lead to antibiotic resistance and cause serious harm.  These can include diarrheal infections, adverse drug events, drug interactions, and cause further infections with antibiotic resistant organisms.  Please keep in mind that we know that it is difficult to watch those we love with an illness, however there are criteria that needs to be met in order for an antibiotic to be ordered.  If you feel that your loved one may need an antibiotic, please do not call the clinic, call the facility and talk to the charge nurse and they will be happy to notify the physician and decide the best course of action.  If you have any questions regarding Antibiotic Stewardship, please call Hayley or myself.  Thank you!
